On Thursday, May 17th, members of the Committee met at the Ronald Regan building in Washington, D.C. for a presentation by June Schoenfeld. The presentation, entitled "Opportunities in Emerging Markets" was divided into three parts.

The first part examined the historic trends in the money flows to emerging markets over the past several decades. June showed how official development assistance supports flows of private capital, and also explained the shifting destinations of capital flows. She also briefly touched on the role of privatization.

The second part of the presentation focused on bilateral development assistance. Bilateral assistance has become primarily driven by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which has resulted in increased spending on social infrastructure projects.

Multilateral development assistance was the subject of the third part of the presentation. June showed that multilateral lending is dominated by the UN, the EC and the World Bank, and emphasized the importance of the EC's soft lending window. June has also noticed that the World Bank has returned to spending on infrastructure projects.

June Schoenfeld, an international marketing consultant, has 25 years of experience in the emerging markets, selling engineering and construction services for infrastructure development. Previous to her consulting practice, June was Vice President of International Marketing for a large, multinational, engineering firm. Pursuing her interest in U.S. trade and competitiveness, June chaired the International Competitiveness Committee at the American Council of Engineering Companies and represented the construction industry as Delegate to The International Engineering & Construction Industries Council.
