EU faces sanction dilemma over Myanmar

The EU laments that it has almost run out of words to describe the horrific violence in Syria.

But its foreign ministers will on Monday issue full-throated sanctions threats to two south-east Asian countries that both highlight dilemmas in how the bloc wields what power it has in the wider world.

Officials meeting in Brussels will task Federica Mogherini, EU foreign policy chief, to draw up a proposed list of Myanmar military officers to sanction over the brutal crackdown on Rohingya Muslims. Separately, they will also warn Cambodia’s government of possible countermeasures if it tightens its clampdown on political opposition.
