IMF presses Congo to break political impasse

The IMF has told the Democratic Republic of Congo that it will probably be unable to help bail out the economy unless the government moves to end the political impasse.

In a letter sent to the Congolese government last month, Christine Lagarde, the IMF’s managing director, strongly hinted that President Joseph Kabila would need to set a timetable for his own departure before multilateral institutions could release emergency funds.

“Our support will need to be part of a context that permits an improvement of the macroeconomic situation and that involves financing from the principal partners of the DRC,” she wrote. “To fulfil these two conditions, a credible path toward political stability will probably be a prerequisite.”
