World leaders seem, at least for now, committed to better coordinating economic policies but the financial sector is returning too rapidly to "business as usual," the managing director of the International Monetary Fund said.
Dominique Strauss-Kahn said despite the postcrisis temptation to return to policies driven by domestic politics, he senses "a willingness to build a new kind of governance for the world" in which leading nations collaborate toward policies that advance both their own and collective economic interests.
Speaking Monday to a group of Washington-based journalists, the former French finance minister cautioned that he expects this new cooperation to persist, but emphasized that it is far from certain. "It could change almost overnight," he said, suggesting that the next six months or so will be decisive.
