Dominique Strauss-Kahn signalled yesterday that he could step down early as managing director of the International Monetary Fund to stage a return to French politics and run against Nicolas Sarkozy for the presidency.
"I intend to see out my mandate but, if you ask me whether, in certain circumstances, I could reconsider that question again, the answer is 'yes'," he told RTL radio.
Until now Mr Strauss-Kahn and his followers in Paris have insisted he would serve out his five-year term as head of the IMF, which runs until November 2012, amid widespread speculation that the former French finance minister could seek the Socialist party's nomination for the presidential election in May of that year.
