It used to be something of a backpackers' special, but these days they are calling the Monday morning flight from Singapore to Jakarta the bankers' express.

"Indonesia has become one of the hottest games in town," says the south-east Asia head of a European private equity firm. "There are always lots of investment bankers and private equity people going down for the week."

This enthusiasm reflects the huge strides made by Indonesia towards more efficient government. It also lies behind Jakarta's recent flirtation with an emerging market fashion: the return of capital controls.
