BRUSSELS—The World Trade Organization said Thursday it will delay until mid-September its ruling on a complaint by the European Union accusing the U.S. of providing illegal public subsidies to aircraft giant Boeing Co.

The two-month delay is a blow to Boeing's European rival, Airbus, which the WTO ruled last week had received billions of dollars in illegal government aid.

The postponement gives Boeing at least a temporary advantage in a public-relations battle that could help it win a $40 billion Pentagon contract for as many as 179 midair-refueling tankers. The new tankers would replace the U.S. Air Force's Eisenhower-era tanker fleet.
