US Trade Official Calls for China to Address "Serious" Concerns

The U.S. continues to have "serious" concerns about China's restrictive trade policies despite some recent moves to improve market access, a senior trade official said Thursday.

Demetrios Marantis, deputy U.S. Trade Representative, welcomed China's commitments to ensure its "indigenous innovation" policies don't discriminate and to join the World Trade Organization's government procurement agreement.

But he rattled off a laundry list of ongoing complaints about policies he says add up to an unfair trade advantage for Chinese companies operating at home and abroad. Those range from subsidies and tax rebates to non-science-based measures restricting agriculture imports and "rampant" intellectual property violations, he said.
