Indonesia will scrap import duties on dozens of goods, from fertiliser to wheat and soya beans, in an effort to curb surging food prices behind higher inflation in south-east Asia’s largest economy.

Rice subsidies and direct cash transfers to low income households will also be increased to help people cope with higher prices.

The measures, agreed on Friday, apply to 57 items, mostly foodstuffs, said Mari Pangestu, trade minister, add ing that they are all “targeted to begin as soon as possible”.
