The world’s leading economies should increase ambition rather than give up on the so-called “Doha round” of trade talks, according to Robert Zoellick, president of the World Bank.

In a speech to be delivered on Monday in Geneva, Mr Zoellick said that the world should “double down” on the limited trade liberalisation currently being discussed in the talks. He criticised the US – including the administration of President George W. Bush – for defensiveness.

Mr Zoellick was largely responsible for driving through the launch of the Doha round in 2001 when he was US trade representative, but the talks struggled to make headway from the beginning. There is now a widespread private acceptance among trade diplomats that the round is in effect dead.
