Germany and Russia are set to reinforce their growing economic and trade ties next week at top-level government talks hosted by Angela Merkel, even as the German chancellor’s camp rebuffed claims she was putting a higher priority on the relationship with Russia than the eurozone crisis. The meeting with Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s president, and a string of government ministers on both sides, follows the announcement on Thursday of a potential tie-up between Gazprom, the Russian state energy monopoly, and RWE, one of Germany’s leading power companies. It also comes after a controversial decision to award Vladimir Putin, the Russian prime minister, a high-profile German prize dedicated to “all those whose courage tears down walls and whose commitment builds bridges”.
