In partnership, the Bretton Woods Committee (BWC) and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (New York Fed) will convene a half-day conference to explore how ongoing innovation in financial markets is changing the environment in which central banks operate and how central banks can innovate through novel policy approaches and operational frameworks.

With the economic repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic still resonating, central banks have played a crucial role in implementing unprecedented actions to support economies and financial systems. This event will examine the use of central bank policy tools in periods of market stress and the impact of these responses on other jurisdictions and the role that central bank coordination plays in enhancing global responses and promoting a resilient global financial system and economy.

Looking ahead, digital innovation has the potential to revolutionize traditional economic and financial ecosystems, impacting the role of central banks. While offering opportunities for inclusion and efficiency, these innovations may also introduce challenges, such as financial sector vulnerabilities and cross-border linkages. The conference will examine the role of central banks in mitigating potential financial system vulnerabilities as well as how central banks might facilitate digital innovation in the financial sector, including through the adoption and implementation of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).
