In 2017, Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, passed a law banning foreign-registered universities that do not offer courses in their home country, a move that seemed to target George Soros’s Central Europe University (CEU).
The CEU, established by the Hungarian-born Soros in 1991, has offered thousands of students from eastern Europe the opportunity to study U.S.-accredited graduate degree programs in a free academic climate.
Following the ban, the 89-year-old Soros decided to move the bulk of CEU courses out of Hungary to a new campus in Vienna, Austria, and pledged to donate another $800 million or so to support this effort in 2019.
